Eyelid Correction

Eyelid Correction is performed with the aim of eliminating impairment of vision or improving the appearance of the eyes. During the procedure surplus tissue around the eyes is removed. Aside from surgical procedures such as Eyelid Lifts (Blepharoplasty) the forehead can be lifted by Micro Liposuction. Additionally, the patient’s own (autologous) stem cells, Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP), or growth factors can be used to improve skin quality.

The eyes are an essential feature of the face and are especially important for facial expressions. With increasing age the skin loses its tension. As a result, hooded eyelids and lachrymal sacks often develop around the eyes, making them look dark and tired.

Both upper and lower eyelids can be affected. Among the most important external signs that make the eyes look older are protruding fat pads, surplus tissue around the eyelids, and eye rings caused by sagging tissue. Apart from aesthetic reasons for eyelid corrections many patients have functional motives that originate from vision impairments or problems when applying makeup.

Eyelid correction is no solution for dark skin below the eyes as this is often caused by a lack of Cortisol, a hormone produced in the adrenal cortex. Stress is one of the main reasons for Cortisol deficiency. In such cases therapy with bioidentical hormones (BHRT) can be recommendable.

Surgical Methods for Eyelid Correction

Eyelid lifts (blepharoplasty) are among the most common aesthetic procedures. During the procedure surplus tissue is delimited and surgically removed. Eyelid surgery is usually performed in local anaesthesia. Lower eyelid blepharoplasty is normally carried out in twilight sleep (sedoanalgesia), since it takes longer and is more complex.

To make the scars remain as invisible as possible, the incisions are placed in the natural skin wrinkles. The stitches are removed five to seven days after the procedure. Instead of using a scalpel, the incision can be made by a laser. Bleeding is reduced when using a laser, but scarring can be more visible (burn injury instead of cut).

Liposuction of the Eye Area

Small fat pads in the lower lid area can be removed by micro liposuction to get rid of the tired facial expression. In the course of this procedure it is sufficient to extract only very small amounts of fat in local anaesthesia. Because the procedure is very gentle, patients are already presentable a few days afterwards.

A tired look of the eyes can not only be caused by surplus volume but also by a lack of volume. Correction of dimples in the area around the eyes due to regression of fat tissue can be achieved by injecting the patient’s own fat into the affected areas. The fat needed for the procedure can be won by liposuction from any fat pad of the patient’s body.

It is also often advisable to improve the skin quality around the eyes to give the skin more elasticity and vitality. Thereby fat depots can be prevented from sliding down because of sagging skin. Stem cells extracted from autologous fat, Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) from the patient’s blood, and growth factors can be applied to stimulate the regeneration of skin and tissue.
